‘Dogs hold off Mocs
Cameron Wells missed 17 of 20 shots in The Citadel’s last two games. And the Bulldogs won both of them.
Once upon a time, that would not have been possible. But the Bulldogs are finding new contributors as the Southern Conference basketball season heads down the stretch.
Junior guard Zach Urbanus scored a season-best 24 points, and Austin Dahn and Bo Holston made big plays in crunch time as The Citadel held off Chattanooga, 68-60, before 2,063 fans Saturday night at McAlister Field House.

In many ways, it was the shot that set the tone for The Citadel’s basketball season.
Keegan Bell’s “Saved by the Bell” buzzer-beater gave Chattanooga a 56-54 win over the Bulldogs on Jan. 14, the most dramatic moment in a string of Southern Conference games that have gone down to the wire for the Bulldogs.
Citadel players have not forgotten Bell’s miracle.

Bulldogs hire new OC
The Citadel football coach Kevin Higgins has hired a couple of assistants well-versed in the triple-option to oversee the Bulldogs’ switch to that attack.
Tommy Laurendine, offensive coordinator at Lenoir-Rhyne for the past two seasons, is the Bulldogs’ new offensive coordinator, Higgins confirmed. And former VMI offensive line coach Bob Bodine will be the assistant offensive coordinator.
Laurendine replaces Dave Cecchini, who ran the Bulldogs’ spread-option attack for the last five years.

The Cherry on top

Freshman guard Ben Cherry netted a career best nine points, including hitting the game tying and go-ahead three-pointer in the second half.
With Samford defenders hounding Cameron Wells’ every dribble, The Citadel needed someone else to play the hero Thursday night.
Guard Ben Cherry, a walk-on freshman, was the unlikely candidate.
Cherry connected on three huge 3-pointers down the stretch, and Bryan Streeter’s rebound basket with 12 seconds remaining lifted The Citadel to a 61-57 win over Samford before 1,440 fans at McAlister Field House.

Tillette returns for Samford but Goldwater stays sidelined

Samford has dropped three straight while head coach Jimmy Tillette recovered from his January 23rd seizure. Tonight, he'll be back on the Samford bench for the first time since the incident.
Looking back, Samford basketball coach Jimmy Tillette says he was lucky that it happened the way it did.
“I could have been in the shower and hit my head, I could have been driving,” Tillette said. “If it had to happen, it was a good venue for it.”
As it was, the scene on the night of Jan. 23 at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum was scary enough. Tillette, 59, suffered a seizure and collapsed during the second half of his team’s 70-67 win over UNC Greensboro.

While Tillette returns for Samford, the same cannot be said for The Citadel’s announcer, Darren Goldwater, who had hoped to return to form in time for tonight’s game. Danny Reed will again fill-in behind the mic as Goldwater continues to recuperate from last week’s hospital stay in Savannah.
Simmons signs with The Citadel
Burke High School football standout Del’Javon Simmons knows there will be an assimilation process now that he has signed to play for The Citadel.
The dapper three-sports star began the process by wearing an argyle sweater vest as he arrived at the Charleston County School District Building on Wednesday morning to sign a national letter of intent. His sweater had swatches of blue, a shade very similar to the “Citadel Blue” worn by the school’s athletic teams.
