CHARLOTTE — Some wide smiles and a few of those flying chest bumps greeted The Citadel’s 55-43 victory over Samford on Friday night in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

And why not? It was just the 11th victory in The Citadel’s tournament history, which dates back to 1938, and basketball coach Ed Conroy’s first in his fourth season at his alma mater.

“Playing The Citadel is like looking in the mirror,” Samford basketball coach Jimmy Tillette said back in February.

Now that March Madness is here in the form of the Southern Conference Tournament in Charlotte, the Bulldogs (of The Citadel) and the Bulldogs (of Samford) will be looking in the mirror for the fourth time in a year.

Samford, of course, is the team that soured one of The Citadel’s greatest seasons ever last year. The Citadel had won 20 games for just the second time in school history and earned a first-round bye in the SoCon Tournament, only to be knocked out by Samford, 76-67, in the quarterfinals in Chattanooga. Continue reading here

In his last eight games, All-Freshman team member Harrison Dupont is averaging nearly 13 points per game while hitting 8 of 16 threes.

Citadel teammates Cameron Wells and Harrison DuPont were named to the 2009-10 SoCon Coaches All-Conference Team on Wednesday. It marks the second straight season that Wells earned All-Conference honors by the coaches. The junior point guard leads the Bulldogs in 13 team categories, including points (523), field goal attempts (455), free throws made (134), rebounds (167), assists (124) and steals (45). DuPont was named to the All-Freshman Team, completing a season in which he has started 17 of 28 games played. He has scored in double figures in eight contests, including a career-high 18 points at Elon on Feb. 13. DuPont has scored in double-digits in five of the last six games, including his first double-double (12 pts., 11 rebounds) in a victory over Western Carolina.   Continue reading here.

Junior Matt Talley was nearly un-hittable in seven innings of work

Charleston, S.C. – Junior Matt Talley didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning and tied a career-high in innings pitched to lead The Citadel over Marshall, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon in the Charleston Crab House Shootout at Riley Park.

Talley earned his first win of the season as he pitched 7.0 solid innings, giving up only two hits, one run, while walking three batters and striking out six. The left-hander did not yield a hit until after the first out in the sixth inning, a double by Marshall’s Kenny Socorro. It was the longest outing for Talley since he went 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts against Savannah State last season on April 14. Matching zero’s on the scoreboard with Talley through much of the game was Thundering Herd starter Shane Farrell, who yielded six hits and two runs to go along with 6.0 innings pitched. Cameron Wells snapped out of his recent slump netting a game high 25 points.

“Sometimes as teams go through a season, they have to remake themselves,” said coach Ed Conroy, whose team ended the regular season at 15-15 overall and 9-9 in the SoCon. “We’ve had to do that a little bit, and I think you saw some of the results of that, at least on the offensive end.

“We didn’t see all those results on the defensive end, but I think by the time we get to the tournament, we’ll be ready to guard teams the way we want to.”

Bryan Streeter and company will battle a tough Furman front line tonight in Greenville

Ed Conroy didn’t take it too hard when UNC Greensboro’s Ben Stywall put up a double-double in a 59-53 win over his Citadel basketball team on Saturday.

After all, the 6-5, 220-pound Stywall — who had 19 points and 14 rebounds against the Bulldogs — averaged a double-double in six games against the mighty ACC this season.

“Sometimes you have to credit a really good performance,” the Bulldogs coach said Tuesday. “And Ben was terrific. He went to work and grabbed some rebounds that really weren’t his, that were out of his area.”

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced Monday that junior Asher Wojciechowski has been tabbed Pitcher of the Week from the opening weekend of the 2010 season.

Wojciechowski struck out nine batters over seven innings in The Citadel’s 4-1 win against East Tennessee State in the season opener on Friday afternoon. The junior allowed just three singles and one run on the day while holding the Buccaneers hitless over the final four innings. A native of Sturgis, Mich., Wojciechowski threw 99 pitches, and his seven innings of work were the most of any league pitcher over the weekend.

‘Dogs fall at home, head to Furman Thursday

The second-half spark that carried The Citadel’s basketball team to five straight wins never quite ignited Saturday against UNC Greensboro.

A touch of fatigue and illness, some cagey 1-3-1 zone defense from the Spartans and a whole lot of Ben Stywall spoiled the Bulldogs’ home finale.

Stywall scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and UNC Greensboro pulled away for a 59-53 victory in front of 3,024 fans at McAlister Field House. Continue reading here

Sophomore Nick Orvin's two-run single with two outs in the eighth proved to be the game winning hit.

‘Dogs rally for 8-7 win

In a wild eighth inning, Nick Orvin’s single up the middle scored two runs that gave the Bulldogs (2-0) an 8-7 advantage. Bryan Altman led off the inning with a hit, his third of the game. After a pair of strikeouts, Justin Mackert walked and Matt Reifsnider reached on a controversial play that brought Blue Hens’ first baseman Ryan Cuneo’s foot off the bag. Orginially called out, the umpires convened and overturned their call giving Reifsnider the base. Ladd then singled to score Altman and re-load the bases and give way to Orvin, who put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time. Continue reading here
