Basketball brings in a 7-footer

Morakinyo Williams comes to The Citadel from Duquesne with two years of eligibility remaining. He'll begin play as a graduate student this season.
Charleston, S.C.- Head Coach Chuck Driesell announced Wednesday that 7-foot graduate junior center Morakinyo Williams will transfer to The Citadel from Duquesne. Williams, who has two years of eligibility in his collegiate career, also played one year under Tubby Smith at the University of Kentucky.
“I am excited that mike has decided to join The Citadel basketball program and community,” said Driesell of the announcement. “Having known Morakinyo since his sophomore year in high school, I know we are getting a young man with a great work ethic and strong desire to be successful both on and off the court.”

Dogs need two wins to force Monday Championship
The Citadel had a two-run lead in the seventh and its ace on the mound.
But that’s when Wojo lost his mojo.
His spiral propelled by a balk and one of three wild pitches, Bulldogs starter Asher Wojciechowski fell apart in a five-run inning that allowed South Carolina to rally for a 9-4 victory Saturday evening in this NCAA regional’s winner’s bracket game before 7,418 fans at Carolina Stadium.

Bulldogs’ win sets up highly anticipated matchup with South Carolina

Matt Talley worked seven innings Friday afternoon, only allowing two runs, helping the Bulldogs get past Virginia Tech
COLUMBIA — Asher Wojciechowski got his way last weekend. Citadel baseball coach Fred Jordan got his way this weekend. And suddenly, the Columbia regional is looking a lot more interesting to the Bulldogs than it did Monday.
Jordan gambled by starting junior left-hander Matt Talley instead of ace pitcher Wojciechowski in Friday afternoon’s NCAA regional opener against Virginia Tech. Talley paid off big by working six shutout innings in a 7-2 victory over the second-seeded Hokies before 5,075 fans at Carolina Stadium.
As a result, the third-seeded Bulldogs (43-20) will have Wojciechowski, a prospective first-round pick in Monday’s major league draft, on the mound for a winners’ bracket showdown with top-seeded South Carolina at 7 p.m. today. Continue reading Jeff Hartsell’s Post and Courier article here

“It’s all about an opportunity”

Sophomore first baseman Justin Mackert followed up his SoCon Player of the Week honor with the SoCon Tournament MVP
Baseball, The Citadel coach Fred Jordan likes to say, is a game of opportunity.
Justin Mackert got his almost exactly a year ago, when the Bulldogs’ junior first baseman, Chris McGuiness, was picked in the 13th round of the major league draft by the Boston Red Sox.
At the time, Mackert was a little-used outfielder who had never played first base and had hit just .150 in a grand total of 20 at-bats as a freshman last season.
“We threw him a first baseman’s glove in the fall,” Jordan said after the Bulldogs won the Southern Conference tournament last weekend. “And now he’s the MVP of the tournament. What a great story.” Continue reading Jeff Hartsell’s article here.
