Bulldogs hook up with Phoenix for fifth time this year

Talley’s gem leads Bulldogs to 40th win

Justin Mackert begins his slide into the plate for the go ahead run in the ninth. The play touched off an ugly brawl overshadowing an otherwise tremendous college baseball game.
Citadel baseball coach Fred Jordan emerged clutching his left shoulder after a wild ninth-inning brawl between his Bulldogs and Elon players Thursday night at Riley Park.
“I don’t know how I hurt it,” Jordan said after his team survived in a 6-3, 10-inning victory over No. 4 Elon in the Southern Conference baseball tournament. “But that’s the least of our worries.”
The top-seeded Bulldogs (40-20) will have today off, with a chance to decompress and get ready for a 1 p.m. Saturday game against the winner of today’s elimination game between Elon and Samford.
Late Thursday night, SoCon officials were reviewing videotape of a melee touched off by a collision at the plate in the ninth inning, a full-blown fight that left the crowd of 3,093 buzzing.

Jordan, Wojciechowski sweep SoCon awards
Bryan Altman also collects second 2nd Team nod
Spartanburg, S.C. – A day after the league coaches selected junior Asher Wojciechowski for Pitcher of the Year and Fred Jordan for Coach of the Year, the Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) followed suit with the same selections on Tuesday.
Wojciechowski (Sturgis, Mich.) fashioned a 10-2 mark during the regular season with a 3.23 ERA and a league-high 128 strikeouts. The junior fanned at least nine batters in nine of his 14 starts on the year while holding the opposition to a .218 batting average. Wojciechowski notched three complete games and tossed 103 innings during the regular season.
Father and son have grown together
Before he recruited his son to play baseball for him at The Citadel, Bulldogs coach Fred Jordan sought advice from Florida State’s Mike Martin and Sam Houston State’s Mark Johnson, veteran coaches whose sons played for them.
“If he’s playing good, he’s gonna be your shortstop,” they told Jordan. “If he’s playing bad, he’s gonna be your son.”
Said Jordan with a laugh, “That pretty much has held true.”

Awards start to roll in

Head Coach Fred Jordan tabbed SoCon Coach of the Year and Asher Wojciechowski earns Pitcher of the Year in a voting of the league’s 11 head coaches. Orvin, Altman and Clevinger also honored, while Justin Mackert picks up his first career SoCon Player of the Week award for his three-homer weekend.
